It’s been almost a year since this shit dropped. I thought “Control” was going to wake rappers up. I thought it was going to usher in a whole new era of dudes coming with better verses, better songs, more meaningful content. Instead, eleven months later, we’re still getting the same old watered down bullshit about women, clubs, drinks and money. It is what it is, I guess.

It’s time for Kendrick to drop that second album though. N’s is waiting.

Is there anything more handheld gaming than sitting in the back of a car, playing Pokémon during a road trip, leaving a backpack open by your feet and filled with distractions for the long drive, and bringing a pillow to nap on once you’ve exhausted your entertainment options?

These nostalgic illustrations come from Matt Rockefeller’s upcoming Pokémon zine, which will be featured at Light Grey Art Lab’s STACKS show in Minneapolis (opening August 1st). He will post full versions of the pieces shown here on his Tumblr next month.

My family is from Nigeria, and my full name is Uzoamaka, which means “The road is good.” Quick lesson: My tribe is Igbo, and you name your kid something that tells your history and hopefully predicts your future. So anyway, in grade school, because my last name started with an A, I was the first in roll call, and nobody ever knew how to pronounce it. So I went home and asked my mother if I could be called Zoe. I remember she was cooking, and in her Nigerian accent she said, “Why?” I said, “Nobody can pronounce it.” Without missing a beat, she said, “If they can learn to say Tchaikovsky and Michelangelo and Dostoyevsky, they can learn to say Uzoamaka.”
